Ryan's currently en route to Nulato (595) from Galena (545), where he had a really great rest and regroup. This section is unrelenting, as it's a bunch of 50 mile stretches on the cold (COLD), exposed Yukon River. His speeds look decent, and at the time of this writing, he's approximately 10 miles from Nulato. He left before 8am this morning and is projected to arrive in Nulato around 1am.
Ryan's been busy pedaling, so not so much to report about this stretch...but in honor of the last of the dog sled teams passing by, I give you Ryan's photos/videos of his dog encounters from Cripple to Ruby. To say this part of the race is his favorite is maybe an understatement. Ryan loves.the.dogs.
(I imagine this is his "I'm so thrilled with all the dogs" face...and you can't tell me otherwise hahaha)
The four photos that follow are from the checkpoint at Cripple...getting ready for the influx of dog teams, but not so busy they opened their doors for some coffee...and apparently a bag of Doritos (score!).
More dog sleds were encountered, more smiles were had. I know PETA has a problem with the dog sled race, but I think if you actually see the dogs, the race, etc. in action, you'd know this is not an endeavor that should be stifled. These dogs are happy, they're driven, they're impressive.
