Today's update will be brief, much like my conversations with Ryan today ;-) I've spent the day writing letters of recommendation and I'm fresh out of adjectives...
Ryan arrived in Nulato (595) at 9:30p AKST, catching some serious good trail en route to the town of 239 (per the 2020 Census). Ryan crashed at the school and was only able to connect via his 907 number (what I refer to as his Burner Number, but really it's an Alaskan cell provider that he syncs up with his Garmin inReach in a way I don't understand so don't ask me haha)...this was a blessing, in that I always love hearing from him, and a curse, in that I think conversing via the inReach would have been preferable.
From what I gathered, the ride yesterday went good, he’s listening to, and enjoying, The Help. Zero idea how he landed on that book...anyone want to guess? Started reading at the BnB in Ruby and decided to continue with the audio version? Fellow racer on the trail suggested it as a personal favorite? First thing that popped up as available on his Libby app? Other?
He messaged from the trail that it was a nice day, little wind, but cold. I told him he better eat a lot in Kaltag if he was cold, as his body needed extra energy to pedal a bike AND keeping warm. I then messaged that I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night. Ha. Me giving HIM advice on how to stay warm. He said he didn’t get my joke, which is most certainly more about him, not me or the joke 🙃.
At the time of this post, he's two short miles from Kaltag (630), where a drop box of supplies and a school gym floor await. Getting ever so close to his beloved safety cabins (656 and 672, respectively) and PIZZA in Unalakleet (706.9)
